About Decoding Brazil
Hi, I’m Natan Silva. I was born and raised in Northeast Brazil — and I created this site because I kept noticing the same thing over and over.
Foreigners would arrive in Brazil full of excitement. They’d been to Rio, heard about the food, maybe learned a few words of Portuguese. But after a few days, they’d look confused. Lost. Not because of language — but because nobody had explained how Brazil actually works.
Why does the waiter never bring the bill? What does “já já” really mean? Why is everyone an hour late and completely relaxed about it? What on earth is a CPF?
These are the things no guidebook explains. And that’s exactly what Decoding Brazil is for.
What you’ll find here: Real explanations of Brazilian culture, language, food, and daily life. Written by someone who lives it every day — not from a tourist’s perspective, but from the inside.
I’m from the Northeast of Brazil — a region with its own music, food, slang, and rhythm of life that most of the world hasn’t discovered yet. And I’m here to change that.
Welcome to the real Brazil.
— Natan Silva
